Word on the street: Dave Steel being torn down in the River Arts District

Share

Asheville’s River Arts District, one of the hottest parts of town right now, continues to change. This time it’s because of demolition, rather than a new addition.

The old Dave Steel location is coming down. Crews are taking the warehouse down, I’m guessing in advance of selling the Clingman Avenue property. The parcel will be a hot commodity – it’s in a prime location across the street from the Clingman Cafe and Jonas Gerard art studio, and just down from the Wedge building, which is home to a number of working artists.

The area has been hot because of the recent opening, just down Depot Street, of the Glen Rock Depot and the Pink Dog Creative artists studio space. The Glen Rock has a mix of retail space and apartments. The Magnetic Field is up and running, and there’s a new restaurant coming on that strip. Depot Street is also the new home of the Asheville Area Arts Council.

@bburnsey – I bet all of the people who have been laid off by Dave Steel are really glad you won't have to look at that building anymore.

@orulz – It's kind of ironic that Dave Steel fabricated the structural steel for the Glen Rock Depot building isn't it?

Just a slight correction: The address of the plant is actually on Roberts St. Also, they own the parcel of land across Roberts St.

RAD is definitely 'cool' these days, but the only new construction that has happened is heavily subsidized (Glen Rock.) Most of what's happened so far has been reuse of existing buildings, and if Dave Steel is tearing down the existing buildings then there won't be anything left to reuse.

That is to say nothing of the soil contamination that is always found at old industrial sites like this.

What will the taggers use for their creative outlet? I, for one, will not miss looking at that building.
