In what I think is an exciting change, work is underway to revamp the WNC Film Commission. The commission, operated by the economic development group AdvantageWest, works to boost filmmaking in western North Carolina.
The change will broaden the commission’s scope to include everything from fashion and architecture to film and performing arts. The new commission will be called the Creative Commerce Commission. The idea is to promote and bolster the “creative economy” that Asheville is so well known for.
Details are still be worked out, and this change probably won’t be official until the fall. Watch for it.
Meantime, I see that the new commission is already getting talked about at hot conferences like SXSW down in Austin. Check it:
For the 2009 SXSW Film Festival, 133 feature-length films were selected, including 57 world premieres, from 1,511 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,220 U.S. and 291 international films. The awards were hosted by Film in North Carolina, a partnership between the Creative Commerce Commission of Asheville, N.C, the North Carolina Film Office and the Piedmont Triad Film Commission.
