WLOSers unveiled their new multi-million dollar set tonight. I haven’t seen it yet, but I hear it’s pretty damn cool.
OK, I need to hear from you, loyal readers. How does it look? What do you think of it? Can you tell they’re broadcasting in high definition?
I need info, people. I’ll watch later tonight, but I want instant reaction!

I don’t really get this "now we are in HD" thing. I mean, I got an HD-tuner-equipped flat screen TV back in May and when I scanned in my basic cable stations with the ATSC tuner, I was pleased to find that I now had about 4 new HD channels already coming in and one of them was was 62-1, the HD version of WLOS. The info screen said it was only in 720 resolution though, compared to WSPA and FOX which seemed to be in full 1080. So, I figured that this much-touted switch to "HD" for WLOS meant that they were going to be full 1080 since, as far as I could tell, they already HAD and HD broadcast.
Well, now that I look at the "new" HD, I can’t see that it is any sharper than the 720 picture I had before and when I look at the info screen it STILL says theh picture is coming in at only 720. So what gives??????
I don’t have an HDTV so I can’t really see a lot of difference in the picture. I have noticed that they aren’t bringing the cameras in as tight/close to the reporter in a lot of shots. While this might work fine on an HDTV, it means you see even less detail of the person on standard def….not that I’m complaining mind you. I don’t like looking that close to Glory-hole Blunt anyway.
I love how after two days of broadcasting, they have yet to fix the logo on the bottom left. Come on, now is the time to start acting like a real station. Darcel looks awesome..Larry looks like larry…Frank and Tammy look good….stan looks too dark…Cuevas looks creepy as always…. and Jay and Victoria look out of place. Also, the way they do their newscasts doesn’t seem to match the set..they need a whole new staff to change that though.
You can really tell now if they have a bad show. They need to do newscasts that mirror the quality of their new set.
I gotta hand it to them, the WLOSers did well this time. I admit that I was expecting some second-rate, tarted-up set, but it is actually quite impressive and the HD works nicely with it. And the Diva is FLAWLESS in HD. You go girl!
It’s a pretty impressive looking set. How many flat-panel monitors do they have hanging around that place now anyway? I think they might’ve gone a bit overboard on that aspect, but otherwise, very nice. Unfortunately, the pretty set doesn’t improve Victoria Dunkle’s teleprompter reading skills…but then, nothing could do that.
Picture looks clearer now too, even though I don’t get it in HD. I have noticed some issues with text being cut off on the 4:3 SD broadcast though. The News13 logo on the left hand side shows up as "ews13" now and some other graphics that come up at the top of the screen are chopped off as well. Remember, WLOS, not everybody is watching on widescreen HD sets yet!
Clay…I would love to see what highschool plays you’ve been too…
The set in no way looks cheap. It’s a 4 million dollar investment, and you see every penny. The set is huge, it has variable back lighting, and basically it looks extremely up market.
They can pull off shots now that no other station in the area can do. As they get better and better at using their new set, you’ll really see how amazing it can be.
I JUST LOVE IT!
I was watching in a public place and some tourist they were surprise with the network-look on a local news station in a small town. They love it too.
Now Clayocean you just need to shut up and see the great things WLOS doing for our comunity.Like the saying: IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY, KEEP TO YOURSELF.
Darcel skin "flawless. And Russ Bowen gorgeous then ever.
To boldly go where no news team has gone before!
I like the new set up, it’s pretty cool!, I like that they even added a new theme to go with it, it sounds more ‘high tech’ very sweet.
I knew Julie would look way beautiful in HD and whatnot (heck she looks good no matter what, in HD or mono, IMAX, 5.1,…real life. wow!)
But I think Victoria looked better, I hope it stays that way.
Yeah they did a super job with it, good for them.
By the way, this is kinda off topic, but I’m a big "show theme" fan and I thought I ask if anyone knew how to get the theme from news 13 old and new. Is there a way? I tried asking the station but never got a reply, just curious.
Techstar, I would have to disagree, I think WSPA might have one of the worst sets going right now for an HD Station. I think their set looks like a college TV Station. Also, they don’t have the options that WLOS does now. They are very limited in shot selection…trust me, give WLOS a few more weeks and you will see.
It kinda reminds me of a backdrop in a high school play, mostly flashy and cheap-looking in my opinion. HD is good, but they need to use HD cameras for all the news reporting, not just in the studio. You can easily tell when its not HD cause the screen shrinks and bars appear on the sides. HD in local news is pretty much everywhere these days, so this is really nothing groundbreaking, just WLOS catching up on what the big cities have had for a while now.
Now one can really tell where their skin stops and the make up ends.
The could have spent the money rounding up more news so they don’t have to show the same old film and tired stories over and over for days.
Starts at 5pm, 5:20, 5:30,5:50,6:00..you get the picture..
The new set looks pretty good though.
Love the new set. Looks like a bigger market than it is. There are some kinks to work out but overall a vast improvement. If anyone has seen sets in larger cities this beats most hands down. The community should be proud that Sinclair appears to take them serious enough to make this kind of investment. As far as the remark about WSPA. WTF? There’s looks like a college set, Just like thier product. Also Darcel and Tammy look great in HD.
I was impressed by their 80" rear projection wide screen tv, even if they did gloat a little over it…after watching world news directly after, both in high def, I thought the WLOS broadcast looked better.
I like the new HD set…of course it will take a while to get the full use out of the set. I was reading online and the WLOS set is the same set that Sinclair had installed at their fox station in the Baltimore market. The actual main desk can move around into different positions. Infact I think WLOS is experimenting some by moving around the main desk for their two nightly shows on MY 40. The Skywatch Weather Center looks great as well, for the first time ever whole news production looks more professional.
I saw it. It looks a little too futuristic. I think the WSPA (7) set is better, it’s a little more subdued. You can tell they’re in HD, at least on the set. It doesn’t appear that they’re filming stories in HD, they had the grey bars on the side during those.
The new set looks pretty good, even though it reminds me of the control deck of some kind of star-ship or something. I can definitely tell it’s HD; it’s really clear. Good for them.
Darcel and especially Tammy at 5 look very good.
You can tell the diff, even on on non HD TV like ours. They had John Le in the studio, but no close-up. Terrie Foster was on location somewhere, so it was hard to see her in this new Hi-Def world. Darcel has toned down that awful swath of purple blush that did not do a sister any favors. Whatever she is wearing right now is working! Cuevas looks grayer on the dome to me…or maybe I haven’t been paying attention? (A definite possibility, I admit. I get my weather from Ray’s Weather Forecast.)
The new set, by the way, reminds me of Fox News; more high-tech looking and a bit cluttered. Lots more standing next to big flat screen monitors with a piece of paper in hand.
All in all, a very nice upgrade. (Of course, if the journalism is strong, who gives a rip about aesthetics???)
