WLOSer Mike Cuevas, goodbye; Hello Jason Boyer

Share

Monday marked the debut of new WLOS chief meteorologist Jason Boyer, and I missed it. Did anybody see Boyer in action? How did he do? Does he look any older? What was the vibe?

With Boyer on set, we must now bid farewell to Mike Cuevas, who came across (imho) as one of the most arrogant, self-centered television weather personalities to ever appear on WLOS. A far cry from, say, down-home Bob Caldwell. So long, Cuevas.

Not everyone agrees with my assessment. Here’s a comment from loyal reader jill:

as far as my husband & I are concerned Mike Cuevas was the best Chief Meterologist WLOS has had other than Mike Bettes! We wish him all the best & know he will go onto better things…..which will be WNC loss!!

No matter. What’s done is done. Let’s get Boyer up to speed and put him to the test. First up: calling the upcoming Western North Carolina winter weather. Good luck!

Weather Guy June 24, 2011 - 9:10 pm

I recognized afamiliar TV face the other day while visiting family in East Tennessee. Name is different but the voice and face are him. http://www.volunteertv.com/station/bios/weather/117655848.html

Mike Cuevas was an excellent weatherman. My wife and I both felt that we could trust him. I enjoyed the little extra reasoning he provided. He would be a great guy to have a beer with and talk about the weather.

I am sure Jason Boyer is a nice guy but I sure miss the professional quality of Mike Cuevas. He was as good as anybody I have ever seen deliver the weather. I understand he is still in the area. A lot of people would like to see WLOS bring him back.

Karen Wynne needs a course in how to make a statement. She does not know where and when to emphasize words. I cannot believe that WLOS keeps her on the air. I click to another station when she begins her report. Mr. Boyer is doing well.

And talk about creepy. This Jason guy makes my skin crawl with his weird haircut, thin lips, strange delivery and bad clothes. But, then again, he fits right in. At least he doesn’t pronounce every word that has a "T" that follows an "N" as slient as Larry does, ie innernet, elemennary, innerduction, innerstate. Yes, I know, that’s folksy and downhomey….I find it grating at that is the one thing I truly liked about Cuevas. He could speak English well.

TuckerDaugh November 27, 2009 - 4:24 am

Oh. HA! Just noticed the comment about the shill and spokesmodel Bob Caldwell who’ll do anything and sell anything for anyone…as a celeb has been. He’s shilling for AutoAdvantage as we speak. (you now the used car company that was brought up on questionable sales practices, strong arming and hard sell, you know them?) Why is this man a credible spokesmodel to hawk used cars? Because he read the weather? Next thing you’ll tell me Candice Little of Hunner Automotive is an actress.

TuckerDaugh November 27, 2009 - 4:20 am

wowl what a lot of people saw as arrogant I saw as competent. Oh. right. We love to go on and on about education but we don’t like people to actually show it, use it, or look like they have it.

P. Larouse November 5, 2009 - 11:22 am

No, Mike Cuevas is not arrogant. The problem is that he has class, style, and good diction. These are three things that most WLOS viewers lack. He is too good for this TV station. The new anchor sems to be more in tune with the circus that WLOS really is.

mimmish October 10, 2009 - 3:28 am

What an ignorant lot you are. I travel the world and have never seen anyone so confidently deliver weather information night after night as Mike Cuevas.

You lost him to a larger market. Much larger…

Tar Heel Hal October 9, 2009 - 9:17 pm

Biff Smeed, might I suggest you get your weather information from the Weather Channel. Looks with no meteorology seems to be the direction they’ve been going in over the past 10 years. Looked at their schedule a few nights ago, for two hours nothing but information shows and no weather. But a pretty face pops up from time to time, so who needs a weather forecast??????

tom October 9, 2009 - 12:29 pm

sorry to see mike go – i’m sure on to bigger and much better than wlos (which seems to have an affinity for talen-limited people – karen, darcel, …)

ThePhan October 8, 2009 - 9:10 pm

That’s true, biffsmeed, but it does at least require that someone understand the differences in weather and weather forecasting across the entire region. The forecast and current weather at WLOS in south Asheville can be dramatically different from what’s happening in Madison County, or in Greenwood, SC. Even if you are getting the weather from another source, you have to be able to at least sound like you know what you’re talking about, and make sure it is relevant to everyone within the market.

B Smart October 8, 2009 - 8:14 pm

Mike’s delivery was stiff and forced. Jason Boyer has a much more relaxed and informative style. He is MUCH better than Cuevas.

Now if someone could just help Karen Wynne. Her talking style is very choppy and disjointed. It’s distracting to the point that it’s difficult to pay attention to what she’s actually trying to say about the weather.

biff smeed October 8, 2009 - 7:14 pm

I’m amazed that in this day of enlightenment, anyone thinks the weather presenters actually predict the weather. WLOS subscribes to a weather forecast service and checks the NOAA forecasts like anyone else. All the on-air person brings to the mix is a personality, image, or "likeability." The forecast will be the same, no matter who’s pointing at the blank wall.

CCC October 8, 2009 - 4:25 pm

Im sure Jason will do just fine I have enjoyed watching him the past couple of nights. I also liked Mike, I just wish they would let us know where he went. Its that Karen Wynne that Wlos need to get rid of, she is really annoying to watch. Bob Caldwell is not helping his image out at all by doing those cheesy commercials he does these days. I really liked him until then. Any way good luck Jason.

Jay October 8, 2009 - 3:06 pm

We liked Mike Bettes a lot. Thought he provided good information and insights. Never felt that with Mike Cuevas. He always seemed so sure of himself and was so often wrong, at least in our view. Saw Jason the other day and was impressed. Think he will do well.

I guess media companies don’t like to air their laundry, nor give competitors plugs, but I have never liked the idea that you tune in and there is a new person in the chair and no comment is made about the change. Got to admit I am curious. Any idea where Mike went?

biff smeed October 8, 2009 - 11:44 am

I don’t really care if the weather presenter is a meteorologist or not. Nor does it matter WHY the weather is doing whatever it’s doing. Nor does it matter what happened all day — I was there, I get it. Just flash a little cleavage and tell me if it’s going to be hot, cold, wet or dry and I’m good.

Rachel October 7, 2009 - 8:56 pm

I think North Carolina will Love Jason Boyer. I for one am sad to see him leave the Denver Market. If Jason can predict weather in Colorado where it is a blizzard one day and 75 the next day he can predict weather anywhere. I had the great privilege of working with him at KWGN here in Denver. I wish him the best. Now all you North Carolinians be nice 🙂

Rose October 7, 2009 - 6:04 pm

Rick, none of those three should even be on TV let alone in the main position. IMHO

Rick October 7, 2009 - 5:06 pm

Never a big fan of Cuevas, let too much time pass between hair dye jobs. My cripe is with WLOS as with many other companies that fell to promote from within. Julie, Karen, and Jay should take note of such a fickle company.

Mountain Man October 7, 2009 - 2:01 am

Jason Boyer is going to be a good fit for the television market. As Ashvegas said…lets get out first winter weather event going before reserving judgement.

BTW…there was no acknowledgment at all on-air of MIke Cuevas departure. My guess is that WLOS wasn’t going to renew his contract.

BTW, the comment in regards to Bob Child being the best ever because he knew the terrain…Bob grew up in Western North Carolina. Big advantage for him.

Tar Heel Hal October 7, 2009 - 1:55 am

I’ve always thought that WLOS has never recognized that weather is the driving force behind local news. I’m not sure any station in this market realizes this little fact. And BTW, Bob Child was not a meteorologist. I’m not putting Bob down. He’s a great guy and a great weather presenter but give the guys and gals credit that get their weather degrees. To my knowledge the only degreed (and the mail-order MSU degree does not count) meteorolgist WLOS have had are Cuevas, Boyer, Mike Bettes and Gary Stevens. That’s only four to my knowledge and this stations been on the air for 60 years! But then again, 4 and 7 don’t have a much better record for hiring "true" meteorologist.

tdselect October 7, 2009 - 1:05 am

Jason Boyer is most definitely a huge improvement over the past weather staff at Channel 13 (although I was always amused by Bob Caldwell). Jason Boyer seems to have a good personality for tv and is very professional and clear. I’m happy he is younger since that usually means smart, energetic and enthusiastic about his work. He is a good addition to WLOS. Welcome back to the somewhat smaller mountains of Western NC.

ThePhan October 6, 2009 - 9:14 pm

I’ve never gotten the sense that WLOS takes weather very seriously, so I don’t expect much improvement. IMHO, the best meteorologist they ever had was Bob Child, who was there for a couple of years before going to the Weather Channel and then eventually back to North Carolina. He at least made an attempt to understand the nuances of weather in this region.

GRT October 6, 2009 - 5:52 pm

Anybody know where Cuevas is going?

I didn’t particularly have a problem with him. The only WLOS weather person who ever REALLY gratted on me was Mike Bettes whose constant obsession with wanting it it always be 75 degrees and sunny got really tiresome really quickly.

lisa October 6, 2009 - 4:22 pm

I for one will miss Mike Cuevas. Loved to watch him. When was his last day? Did he say goodbye? I must’ve missed it. I watched Jason. Looked kinda forced to me. We shall see.

Martha October 6, 2009 - 4:20 pm

Damn! Now when am I going to get to use my Transylvanian accent?

Ash October 6, 2009 - 3:35 pm

kmcmoobud, OK, you got me there.

Thanks for the reviews, everyone!

RadioLongAgo October 6, 2009 - 3:21 pm

Yes, welcome Jason…
Just somebody PLEASE show the map in motion when precipitation is in the area. I don’t care if it is raining on Long Shoals Road, WHERE is it going?
Jason looked like a seasoned pro last night…

kmcmoobud October 6, 2009 - 3:18 pm

Bob Caldwell? Really? I thought he was an arrogant know-it-all. I lost all patience with him after he claimed, with great authority, that Bob Seger is Pete Seeger’s son.

A faithful follower October 6, 2009 - 3:07 pm

Saw Jason last night at 5:00; 5:30, and 6:00. I thought he did real good. It was refresing to have someone with an on-air personality. I like his enthusiasm and presentation and I look forward to watching him in the days and weeks to come. He does look like he has grown up some from that youthful boyish charm of 5 years ago. Welcome back Jason.

lee October 6, 2009 - 2:54 pm

Thank God Mike Cuevas is gone! He was a terrible personality on tv. Creepy to watch.

I think Jason Boyer will be great for WLOS and look forward to him on Ch. 13.
