Fatal wreck follow-up
Holly Headache brought us the follow-up on the fatal I-40 crash at 6 on Wednesday. She rehashed what we knew (police chased an SUV, which turned the wrong way down an Interstate exit ramp), gave us the names of the victims, showed again the home video someone brought to WLOS and quoted the police chief. In other words, she didn’t move the story ahead at all.

At 11, there was some reaction from the family of the driver of the truck who died. And they had the expected 911 recording of the woman who initiated it all by saying her ex-boyfriend was outside the Ashvegas Mall threatening to kill her.

The police chief told us that, according to the preliminary investigation and witness reports, it appeared that the suspect fleeing police purposefully drove into the dump truck that he hit.

What?

That doesn’t make sense to me at all. Why would the driver of an SUV, a driver running from police, a driver with outstanding arrest warrants, veer into the path of a truck? Makes no sense at all.

I still haven’t seen any reporting as to how fast anyone was going.

The grinch that stole Christmas

Apparently, grinches are real. Here’s how Diva Darcel started one report Wednesday afternoon, in all earnestness: “A grinch stole Christmas in Rutherford County” after he took something like $10,000 worth of bling. Wow.

Bellamy count
We’re thinking about counting the number of times new Mayor Terry Bellamy is spotted at TV news events. In the past couple of days, we’ve seen her: at the re-enlistment ceremony of new National Guard members; the funeral of an Ashvegas High School ROTC teacher; the honoring of the Ashvegas High School Cougars football team for their recent state championship; seems like there were a couple more…

White Lightnin’ brings us this:
Right before Good Morning America Thursday (@ 6:55) Dunklehead whips out photos of her kid’s first birthday party.

WTF?

Now, I’m sure he’s a nice kid (after all, just because his mother is on TV doesn’t make him a rotten apple), but he probably has the DNA to be on camera if he is one-100th as self absorbed as his mother appeared to be Thursday.

Note to Vickie: just because you CAN share your family photos with the viewing audience doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

Crap like that kinda makes it difficult to hear the side of the argument that TV people are just like anyone else. I mean, I don’t force pictures of my kid on anyone who wants to see them.

That’s what the Internet is for.. right?
Happy Birthday, Gus!

And loyal reader Bulldog has this:
Is there anything more useless than WLOSers’ repeat of the Saturday night newscast at 8 am on Sunday mornings, complete with a repeat of another innaccurate weather forecast? If the station is going to be too cheap to do a live broadcast on Sunday mornings, couldn’t they at least delete the weather segment that is totally confusing with regard to what day they’re talking about? Not to mention the consistent missed “winter weather” warnings. It just makes WLOS look foolish, and Ashvegas look smalltown hicks who don’t know any better.

You’ve just got to love Ought-5 Speak: The driver of the SUV had "psychological issues." I used to work at a corporately controlled profession where everything was an "issue." There were no problems, challenges, headaches, fuck-ups, slackers, wierdos, conflicts, disagreements – anybody not doing the job he or she was well compensated for had an "issue." I suppose I’m just getting old and cranky. As for the SUV driver, wouldn’t you love to hear an investigating official say, "We don’t know what prompted this incident, or his decision to drive into the dump truck, except that from looking at his record this guy was crazy as a shit-house rat."

In reponse to the 11 pm opening story…Ashvegas, I don’t think this story is supposed to make sense to anybody. Just by the 911 call and the mug-shot shown on TV, I would bet this fella who threated his ex-girlfriend had some psychological issues.

The decision to air a repeat of WLOS at 11:00 is not that of the people at WLOS, but the people at Sinclair. It took management a long time to approve a Saturday morning broadcast (if you remember a long while back, it used to be a repeat of the Friday 11pm newscast). I also believe management has asked to do a live Sunday broadcast several times and corporate keeps basically saying, "sure, if you don’t mind doing it for free cause we aren’t going to pay anyone to come in." I guess if our loyal viewers wanted to make a donation to have a crew come in and do so (lets see, thats an engineer, director, chyron op, audio op, prompter op, producer, camera/floor director, and a anchor/weather) then maybe they could start one up and compete with the other stations in this market on Sunday’s as well.

Yes, don’t forget Bellamy’s appearance with native-rocker Warren Haynes at Habitat for Humanity. It was no surprise to see her there (or at the concert for that matter).

I bet "Old Man Winter" was right on the Grinch’s tail.
