Take a tax hike

WLOSers, who never fail to call a tax increase a “tax hike” for some reason, phoned in the 6 p.m. broadcast with a top story from Holly Headache about the tax on a pack of cigs going up a quarter.

Holly had an interview with one local convenience store owner at 6, then filled in everything else with broad, insightful generalizations. Candy helped, basically saying that smokers are agin’ it and nonsmokers are for it. Then it was straight off to a plane crash in Greece, expected turmoil in the Middle East, something in Iraq, then Julie in the weather center.

Insightful local reporting, that.

At 11, Holly had a nonsmoker and a smoker, too. But the smoker wasn’t really against the tax. He said most will keep on smoking, no matter what.

I’m prettier than you

Candycane loves to go over to the weather desk and stand next to Julie Blunder. Candy just lords her beauty pageant crown over poor little Miss Julie. You can just see Candy strike the pose, ready to do the turn and answer the question: “If you win the crown, what will you do to stop world hunger?”

We interrupt our regular programming for a public service announcement

WLOS has been running tons of “public service” announcements lately. We’re wondering – is there some federal deadline they’re trying to meet that requires X number of public service announcements?

The one tonight was about not letting underage kids buy alcohol or something. The other day, it was a lame promo about how to stay safe in storms. I also saw a “public service announcement” telling people to go a website to learn how to get your free HDTV.

Drop the kids in the pool

WLOSers have been all over the story about our public swimming pools closing for the season – they’ve harped on it for about four days straight. We get it already. Summer’s almost over. It rained a lot and kids didn’t get to stay in the water as much.

We get it, already!

I watch WLOS only for local news, and frankly, I think it sucks. So much hype over each story and then each story is poorly executed. And the three of the beauty queens every weekend is overkill.
