When bugs attack
I hope you guys were watching the 5 on Friday, because it was frickin’ high-larious. Here’s what happenend.
Jay Seltzer led off with a tease from the dramatic scene of the Transylvania County landslide from the night before. You know, the landslide that knocked one trailer off its cinderblocks. Yeah, that one.
So Seltzer is standing there, looking serious as hell, doing his thing. At Ashvegas, we’re standing around watching, and I immediately point to the screen and say, “Look at all those bugs around Jay’s head.” There was a swarm of those little summer gnats that have been breeding like crazy in all this rain and humidity we’ve been having.
So a few seconds later, Seltzer finishes his tease. There’s a pause. The camera’s still on him. He’s silent. Then WHAP! Seltzer starts slapping himself silly because of the bugs. We at Ashvegas all just about pissed ourselves. We roared. The laughnado was loud and long.
Thanks for making our day, Jay. Next time, bring some bug spray along. Better yet, stick to the weather duties.
Scottie in a slicker
Speaking of the slide, Scottie-too-Hottie got out in the rain and muck the night before to report from the scene of the one-trailer landslide, I guess in his continuing quest to try and land that lead anchor spot next to Diva Darcel.
Scottie did himself proud. He proved he’s still got his reporting chops. Maybe it will be enough to put him over the top and land him the job. Stay tuned.
WLOS lie of the day
The local teevee station’s lie of the day came Friday at 6 as it reported a “murder” in Black Mountain. A prominent businessman was found dead in his home, and the WLOSers immediately labeled it a murder, despite a quote from an officer in their own report who called it “an unexplained death.”
WLOS went on to show the body being carted off. How sleazy can you get? Charu had a piece of the story, reporting from downtown Black Mountain.
Note to WLOS: “murder” is a legal term, only to be used after someone has been found guilty of a killing. Otherwise, call it a “homicide” or shooting victim or stabbing victim or whatever. Stop your rush to judgement, stop lying, start getting your facts right.
Saturday, police said they were investigating a homicide. Good on WLOS for guessing right.

You’re exactly right. It may be a homicide, but it’s not a “murder” until a jury renders a verdict of murder, as opposed to a number of legal options ranging from self-defense to involuntary or voluntary manslaughter, to name but three other possible outcomes.
I’m pretty sure it was called an “unexplained death” on WLOS until investigators called it a murder on Saturday. The whole point of the 6pm story Holly did on Saturday was the change to murder.
