WLOSers reported Tuesday that a Canton pastor has stepped down from his job after being charged with stealing a sex toy.
WLOS says the dude was a pastor at New Covenant Baptist, and that he has resigned.
The Haywood County News first reported the incident. The paper is a sister product of the Asheville Citizen-Times, which picked up the story and posted it prominently on its web site.
Here it is:
CANTON – A Canton man was arrested last week for allegedly breaking into a woman’s house and stealing a sex toy. Looks like she might have to invest in some new sex toys now, I hear you can buy a very realistic sex doll here.
According to warrants, 48-year-old Scott Gillis Murray, of Murray Road, allegedly broke into a home off of N.C. 110 on July 25 and stole “one adult toy personal entertainment device and one bottle of personal lubricant.”
Haywood County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Murray Saturday and charged him with felony burglary, felony larceny after breaking and entering, and felony possession of stolen property. He was released on $3,000 unsecured bond.

Joey, it’s definitely not my church. I’ve only been there once in my life, but I am vaguely familiar with the place, and yes, they probably do need to be more selective in giving folks that title. Seems like they have a lot of "associate pastors" from what I’ve heard.
By the way, yesterday’s Mountaineer newspaper has more details on the actual break-in, but some things still don’t make good sense. I guess this type of thing probably never will.
maybe that church (your church, perhaps?) needs to be a bit more selective when doling out the title "pastor".
Okay, that Haywood county crack is uncalled for, thanks. I happen to live in Haywood county and let me assure you that this is not a common occurrence among our pastors (or anyone else for that matter). And obviously there is more to this story than there appears to be. Such as why would he break into someone’s house and steal such an item that I’m sure he could easily buy at one of those "adult stores" in Asheville? (yeah, we don’t have any of those in Haywood county) and ONLY that item? Why not take some money or REAL valuables while he’s at it? Doesn’t make sense. And if he broke his leg running from the house he broke into, as WLOS reported, why was he not caught at or near the house soon after? Why did he turn himself in to the Sheriff’s office on Saturday instead? These things just don’t add up.
Also, according to WLOS, this guy was not THE pastor of the church. Far from it. He was in fact only an associate pastor, apparently one of many at New Covenant Church. So low on their totem pole that he wasn’t even listed as a pastor on their website, except in a single photo (now removed) on their "Life Groups" page.
Anyway, don’t judge Haywood county on what one guy supposedly does, plastic paddy. We may have preacers that preach politics, or do any number of other weird, unexplainable things, but I’ll bet it doesn’t compare to the stuff that goes on in Asheville, Buncombe county, and several other counties around these parts.
Beautiful. The biggest laugh I’ve had all day. Watching WLOS and seeing them straight faced reading of sex toys and personal lubricant is classic television.
Only in Haywood county.
