Never too late for a white Christmas
It’s snowing in Haywood County, Russ “Beefcake” Bowen and Julie Blunder told us breathlessly Sunday night. That means some folks in our viewing area got a white Christmas, they said. Hurray! they said.
OK, WLOSers need to explain this to me. Why is snow on Dec. 25 something the WLOS weather-guessers are wishing for, working to bring us. Why is snow on Christmas something Diva Darcel and all the other news readers something they ask about constantly, with hope in their little doe eyes?
Because at WLOS, snow on every other day of the year is something to fear. Something to fret about and worry over. Every other day of the year, it’s a “blast of winter weather,” but if it falls on Christmas Day, it’s something special, hopeful.
Please. Explain that to me, sheeple.
Working at WalGreens
We knew it was coming – the “some people have to work on a holiday” story. So Sunday, WLOS talked to the folks at WalGreens. It was the only store they could find open, Russ said.
Well, apparently somebody wasn’t working in the WLOS control room, because at the start of the story, they showed video of people setting up food at homeless shelter. This bad video went on for half of the report.
We interrupt this newscast for a commercial from Mission
WLOSers basically did a commercial for Mission Hospitals during their broadcast Sunday. The premise was that “Santa” was going around the hospital passing out goodies and bringing cheer. But it really felt like a commercial. All Santa did was hand out some puny candy canes. It was also weird because Santa walked like a weirdo, and the video kept showing Santa’s weird club foot or something. It made no sense.
The kicker was the soundbyte from Joe Damore, the hospital ceo. He gave some canned quote, but he was posed in front of the camera, with Santa next to him and a bunch of worker elves behind, in what looked like a really poorly set-up commercial. Ouch.
Jews give Christians day off
Our local Jewish population did a little something extra to help all the Christian celebrating Christmas – the Jews volunteered to cook and serve the food at the ABCCM shelter Sunday. They wanted to let all the Christians know they honored their holiday. That’s nice. What have the Christians ever done for you guys, I asked myself?
So it turns out that the bad video shown during the earlier WalGreens report was supposed to be shown here. It was.
Happy Hannukah
Speaking of Jews, Hannukah started Sunday night and WLOSers brought us a report of a menorah lighting ceremony. Ashvegas City Councilman Carl Mumpower was there, seen in the crowd and then later lighting a candle. Carl, we didn’t know you were a member of the tribe? Local judge Dennis Winner described the ceremony for us.
Video goes haywire
Speaking of people not working on Christmas – it was clear that WLOS had the C Team working. We noted the bad video earlier. But things really broke down during Larry “Whitey” Hawley’s sports report.
They showed football when he was talking about basketball and basketball when he was talking about football. At one point, Larry was left standing there in front of the camera, shuffling his papers and desperately trying to hang onto his dignity. He seemed to handle it OK.
Whew.
