Press release here:

Serenade/The Proposition, based on the life of Abraham Lincoln, introduces Asheville to modern dance royalty on April 15th when the Bill T. Jones Dance Company, one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance world, comes to the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.  Western North Carolina will get a rare chance to see the lavish multimedia performance piece the Wall Street Journal describes as  “Supremely distinguished,” and the NY Times declares, “Exciting… playful and stirring.”

But who is Bill T. Jones? His name follows those of Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, and Twyla Tharpe in a lineage of modern dance icons. The journey of Jones’ life has been a struggle to overcome adversity, driving him to the artistic excellence and commercial success for which he is now so widely known.

The son of migrant field-workers, Jones left rural Florida in 1955 when his family relocated to settle in a nearly all-white upstate New York town when he was three.  Fast-forward 50 years: Mr. Jones is the recipient of a 2007 Tony Award for choreography for Spring Awakenings, a second Tony in 2009 for his musical Fela!, based on the life of groundbreaking Nigerian composer Fela Kuti, a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, an Obie Award – and most recently, in December Mr. Jones was named a 2010 Kennedy Center Honors recipient alongside fellow honorees Paul McCartney, Jerry Herman, Merle Haggard and Oprah Winfrey.  The lush growth of Jones’ career is a far cry from his meager roots.

The show represents a continued effort by Asheville Bravo Concerts, the area’s oldest arts non-profit, to expand multicultural representation in area performing arts programming.  Individual tickets range from $20-$60 and can be purchased by calling the Asheville Bravo Concerts office at (828) 225-5887, visiting www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Civic Center Box Office.  Students receive half-price tickets for all Bravo concerts.  For more information please visit www.ashevillebravoconcerts.org.
