Loyal reader Jan asks the question. Can anybody help?
Hey there. I didn’t know where else to turn and figured that you know a lot of people and a lot of things…maybe you know!
What’s up with the Buncombe County Wi-Fi access downtown? I’ve tried on several different laptops to connect. I can always get a TCP/IP address & default gateway address, but I can’t ever get out onto the internet.
I try to ping something like Google.com and can’t get through. I’ve tried going to wifi.buncombecounty.org thinking you had to register on their website before you would be allowed through their network and onto the internet, but I can’t get to that website either. And I would have thought that if you did need to register (like when you’re at a hotel) that the first website you attempted to go to, you’d get redirected to some kind of registration website. But that doesn’t happen either.
Any idea what’s up? The Buncombecounty.org website doesn’t have any helpful info on the service, and I can’t find any info anywhere else.

I’ve had it work once in the past month, but it didn’t work today. My husband, who works downtown, say it generally works for him. I ate lunch at Heiwa today, and BuncCo’s wifi wasn’t even an available network, which is pretty crap for range (assuming it works consistently at some point in the future).
Who cars, it is slower then 56K.
3G is up and running and I love it… But it aint free because you get what you pay for.
Same thing happens to me. I gave up trying, but would love to know WTF it doesn’t work.
