Loyal reader D writes Ashvegas the following:
I’ve made an observation about the weather segment that’s been buggin’ me for awhile, and since you keep up with the WLOS’ers, I wanted to see if maybe you’ve picked up on it, too.
I record the news every evening to watch after I get home from work. In the last few months, I’ve noticed that whenever Mike does the local temps, he ALWAYS mentions Otto (Macon county). What is up with that? Neither Julie nor Karen nor Jay talk about Otto with such frequency.
Next time you tune in, see if you catch what I’m talking about. I’ve got my husband paying attention to it now, and he finds it a bit curious too.
Huh. I haven’t noticed, but I’ll start paying closer attention. Thanks for the note!

You are right Miss Daisy and of course Master Control he has something in Otto.
He should replace Asheville with Woodfin on the Weather Map!
The people at the station have noticed this as well. . .
Maybe someone in Otto is waxing the weather vane.
wink, wink
Otto has a scientific research station and some weather equipment set up just outside of "town". A buddy of mine worked out there for a year once. I think they get some of their western counties weather data from the Otto station.
Whats’ the scoop on Julie?
Mike is about to do the late weather, I’m waiting for Otto with anticipation.
Several years ago I was at the wedding of Julie Blunder (now soon to be divorced) when another guest complained to Mike Cuevas that he never mentioned the town of Andrews by name. He promised to start mentioning it in his forecast. Maybe someone in Otto said the same thing and wanted their town highlighted.
Otto is not a significant place, even to Macon county natives and residents. Oh, they know where it is. Heck, I’ve driven right through it on the way from Atlanta to Asheville. It’s just a wide place in the road. There’s an Otto Body Shop (and that’s not a play on words). There’s an Otto School. But it’s sort of like describing Buncombe County using a placename like Alexander, or Henderson County using Balfour or Gerton.
I guess he doesn’t know Macon Cty. geography very well. Everyone would be better served by a weather reporter who describes conditions using the name of the county seat, Franklin, which is just a few miles away.
And BTW, Otto first came to my attention about ten or twenty years ago, when there were news stories about the racist Church of the Creator, which was "based" in Otto. I guess the main guy’s compound was in the Otto Area.
Mike: Just say Franklin.
