What’s in the news: The cold, some politics, POPAsheville and not much else

Share

So a Gamecock, a Gator and a Seminole walk into a bar…

That’s where the WLOSers seemed to be headed with their happy-talk Sunday night, as Edward McDonald told us he was a South Carolina man, Carolyn Ryan said she was a Florida Stater and Karen Wynne did the big gator mouth move to show her Florida pride.

Anyway, here’s the news:

With Carolyn holding down the anchor desk, she went straight to the weather, where Karen told us it was cold outside. She kept saying we could get to single digits Sunday night, but the official forecast was a 10-degree low.

Then Carolyn tossed it to Kassandra Pride, who said the cold is tough on cars. She went to an auto supply store, where a dude said to make sure you’re battery is good and you have good anti-freeze. He also apparently sold some snow-resistant wiper blades to Kassandra, who held one up at the end of her report.

Next up was Russ Bowen, who has been all over South Carolina chasing presidential candidates. He covered the GOP primary, and it looks like he’ll remain in South Kackalacky for the Democratic primary coming up. In Myrtle Beach, Russ talked to some old northerners who said they wanted someone like Truman or Carter back in office.

In other news, WLOSers said the POPAsheville music concert was happening… a Duke graduate student was found shot to death in an apartment… Local Jews celebrated the Tu b’shevat festival, a sort of Jewish arbor day… And UNCA’s Writers at Home Series brought wordsmiths downtown to Malaprop’s.
