What’s in the news: Prostitution sting, stolen drugs and more

Share

Here’s some of what WLOSers had on Tuesday:

More on the skeleton
WLOSer Carolyn Ryan played us the 911 call from the hunter who found the skull of missing hiker John Bryant over the weekend, then told us that more cops and forensics students were in the woods looking for clues. Local sheriffs in Macon and Transylvania counties are trying to tie convicted killer Gary Hilton to the killing. He’s the guy who killed a hiker in Georgia.

The Macon County sheriff wants anyone who saw Hilton in the county back in October to come forward. Ryan talked to one person who said they saw Hilton. Buddy Huckabee said he has exact dates and times, and that the guy was memorable.

In other news…
The cops raided a trailer in Leicester and nabbed a fugitive… Somebody broke into the Mars Hill Pharmacy and stole 5,200 does of oxy and methadone. The cops are worried the pills will end up on the street.

Prostitution crackdown
WLOSers totally ripped off news that I posted here on Monday about how the city was going to start putting names and mug shots of prostitutes and johns up on the city’s cable channel. On Monday, I dubbed it John TV, and that’s exactly what WLOSer Frank Fraboni picked up on, only he kept calling it “Johns TV.” What the hell?

Anyway, Fraboni went out and talked to the manager of the Tire King on Ashland, who said yeah, he sees lots of whores walking around and he’s complained about it. Then Fraboni went to Asheville City Council’s retreat and talked to Mayor Terry Bellamy and Vice Mayor Jan Davis, who said the city’s trying to raise awareness and get the community’s help to stop this activity.

Fraboni said the Asheville Police Department is still working to get the mug shots on television.

In still other news…
U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler announced $94,000 to help Madison County fight meth. WLOSers failed to mention that Shuler also announced $300,000 was going to the Asheville Police Department to help fight drugs and improve weapons training… And 109 dogs are still up for adoption at the former All Creatures Great and Small no-kill animal shelter in Henderson County.

I remember watching Carolyn’s story. She said something like "[the hunter] was going out to scout deers." Deers? Really?

I’m not sure though that one of the job descriptions of the assignment editor or news director is "must constantly refresh Ashvegas for updates." But I could be wrong.

Monday was a big local news day (The Bryant body ID).

Tuesday there was VERY little local news (everything was all about super tuesday nationally).

That’s probably the only reason they ran this story tuesday instead of monday, or just not at all.

It’s not some amazing conspiracy to rip off ashevegas. They work on a different time table and have different priorities. I think I even explained this before.

relax ash.

But I do find the idea of "getting a scoop" about a tv program by watching the tv program hillarious.

Tonight I am totally gonna get the scoop on the new lost.

It began airing Friday, and aired several times over the weekend on the City Channel without any apparent notice until it was posted here on Monday. I’m glad for the attention the project has gotten, but it does seem that people saw it here first and then began reporting on it. Ashvegas didn’t get an exclusive, but he paid attention and got a scoop nonetheless.

Ripper, indeed folks in the media do the same stories. What interests me is that the news has been around, but WLOS waits until I post something to do the story. in terms of talking to people, the politicians didn’t add anything to the story. The Tire King manager was OK.

"WLOSers totally ripped off news that I posted here on Monday" from news that you totally ripped of the Asheville Channel. That’s kinda like the pot calling the kettle black, ain’t it. At least WLOS went to talk to the people involved.
