What’s in the news: House fire in Maggie Valley and a bunch of other non-news

Here’s what we saw on the WLOSer news tonight:

Russ was at the helm and led things off with a story by Kassandra Pride on a house fire last night in Maggie Valley. Nobody was injured. That was about it, except for firefighters saying recent rain helped keep the fire from spreading.

In other news, WLOSers said Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan has announced a new “suppression team” aimed at stopping breaking-and-entering crimes. There was a mention that horse rescue agencies are helping a lot more horses because the cost of hay is $100 a bale, versus $12 a bale last year.

WLOSers also said that North Carolina is the sixth fastest-growing state in the nation, which means there’s more traffic on the roads. And the folks at the YMI celebrated Kwanzaa today with music and dance and candle lighting.

There was a N.C. Indoor Motocross race at the WNC Agricultural Center today, and Gov. Mike Easley was on the Woodwright’s Shop show on PBS today to help celebrate its 20th anniversary or something.

And finally, WLOSers mentioned that under a new state law, any time someone gets arrested in North Carolina, they’ll be asked if they’re a legal resident of the United States.
