What you’re saying about the quake

Looks like WLOS blew it on coverage of the Wednesday night quake. During the 11 p.m. broadcast, Darcel parted from the script for about 15 seconds with one line, saying there was breaking news that an earthquake had been reported. Then she went into her dumb health report. After the news, WLOS had an update at the bottom of the screen.

The quake was recorded at 11:09, according to USGS. Couldn’t they get a live shot out in the parking lot up? Something with a little more immediacy? I don’t care if there isn’t any damage – it’s news, it’s ratings, baby.

Here’s what you’ve said so far:

NewsMan
– First of all, FOX was off the air! They had time to decide how they would handle the situation! WLOS was taking in phone call after phone call! Each time someone called they asked if they had damage, no one had damage! So you tell me what the big deal is!

question
– Why am I having to watch Fox to find out what’s going on? WLOS just has the thing at the bottom of the screen. Now there’s a rock slide, all this on Fox not on our local station. Who’s running that place? My dog was freaking out poor thing. i hope pooty is ok.

Now Fox Carolina has pictures of damage sent in by viewers, and a phone interview with Asheville Police, e-mails, etc. Live interview with radio station. Lots of information.
WLOS? Jimmy Kimmell

Matt Mulder
– Yeah, I felt that too.
Woah, that must have been a big one for this area. Has WLOS reported the size of the quake?
Okay, the WLOS Web site is useless. There’s no updated news or breaking story on the site at all.

Future Daddy
I thought a truck had hit my home. I also ran outside! My neighbor recently moved here from San Francisco and said, “Hey, that was an earthquake!”

Can’t wait to see how WLOS reports this!

So I’m sitting out here on the San Andreas fault, and there’s an earthquake in Asheville? I’m worried about Pooty too, Ash.

Thanks for the props on my quake comments. I tried taking photos of the extensive damage… but there wasn’t any in the ‘hood.

Newsman you’re an idot. If WLOS had been on the air there wouldn’t be so many phone calls. WLOS doesn’t know and can’t handle real breaking news situations. They’re complacent in the lack of hard local news and panic when it comes to the real thing. You ask what the big deal is? If there were that many phone calls, someone thought it was.

It was a 3.8, fer cryin’ out loud. No need to “go Natalee” over little damage caused by a small temblor.

Well, I didn’t feel the quake. But of course I’m 3,000 miles away. haha. Being in California I have felt my fair share of these shakers.

Earthquakes are one of my many hobbies. I have created a special report for your quake. Feel free to check it out at the attached link. Leave a comment and let me know if the maps were interesting and/or useful.
