What are this year’s Austin-to-Asheville connections at SXSW?

Share

One of these days, I’m going to make it to the South By Southwest festival in Austin, which is coming up next week. Since it won’t be this year, I need to live vicariously through those Asheville folks who are going, or who have some connection to the event.

So, who are the Asheville folks who will be going to the festival, or featured, or performing, or appearing in films to be showcased, etc.? I’d love to know, and to be able to tell others.

Here’s one connection off the top: One of my favorite Asheville-area poster artists, James Flames, will be there selling his incredible artwork.

Another is that, for at least the past couple of years that I know, the N.C. Film Office is sponsoring the “filmmakers lounge” at the festival.

Find the SXSW schedule here. It lists a bunch of cool panel discussions and events. There’s something called the “Tweet House,” which celebrates the real-time web. There’s a panel about turning your web app into a cooperative game. And, because sex sells, a panel entitled “The Sexual Survival Guide for Geeks.”

Brett McCall is going to SXSWi to represent Fate of the World, the Asheville-debuted climate change game, on panels. Jealous.

I'm sure the Music Allies (national indie music and festival promotion co) team is attending: Sean, Greg, Troy and maybe even Curt. They'll probably blog about it. I will share.

And No Depression writer Kim Ruehl is there.

I need to go, too. Let's all set a goal for 2012, you, me and Dusty!

I have the exact same sentiments Jason. 2011 was my year to go but I am attending the NC Tourism conference here in Asheville this weekend. I know that Brett McCall is either out there now or in route. Hope to see you out there in 2012!
