Robbinsville shooting
A Robbinsville town alderman shot and killed a man on Friday, and WLOSers briefly followed up on the story over the weekend. They sent Holly Headache all the way out to Graham County to show us the shopping center parking lot where the alleged shooter, Johnny Williams, shot and killed a man who once worked for him. Holly said the two had had a long-running dispute, but there were no details. Just crying relatives of the victim, and a dude who said the alleged shooter was a good guy.
Fireman remembered
There’s a memorial service planned in Weaverville this week to remember Jack Clark, a 25-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department who died last week in a car wreck in Nevada. His funeral is Wednesday.
Wolf hybrid still on the loose
WLOSers have stayed on this weird story – a wolf hybrid dog bit somebody in Henderson County, was put in doggie jail, and somehow broke loose. WLOSers have danced around this fact, but reported that a policeman shot the dog twice. But nobody can find the darn thing, so officials and WLOSers are still warning people to watch out
What happened to ’13 minutes of non-stop news?’
WLOSers seem to have been downplaying that boast lately. What’s up? Maybe because they’re going to news in Iraq three minutes in?
Severe weather Sunday
Russ “Beefcake” Bowen and Julie Blunder told us that we had some thunder and lightning around the mountains on Sunday night. There was some hail and some heavy rain. A few tree limbs went down in Buncombe, Polk and Rutherford counties, but there were no injuries and only a few power outages, they said.
Then Russ cut to a network report about Florida bracing for Alberto, the first named tropical storm of the hurricane season. The network reporter reminded us that there were 28 storms last year, including 15 hurricanes – one named Katrina. Also, Florida alone has seen seven hurricanes in the last two years and residents there are pretty much sick of it all.
Interstate 40 road work
Holly Headache also went all the way out to the Tennessee state line in Haywood County to check on construction work on Interstate 40. A portion of the road was shut down so that a tunnel could be worked on – new lights, some resurfacing, some mowing and pavement patching. The DOT says all the work will make the road safer, Holly told us.
No Powerball winner Saturday
That means the jackpot is up to $86 million for the Wednesday drawing.
Liquor by the drink in Franklin?
That’s the question that will be on the ballot on July 25. That, and whether or not to sell malt beverages and open an ABC store in Franklin. Only Franklin residents can vote.
