Press release here:
Our VOICE is excited to be bringing the “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event to Asheville on Saturday April 24th and has thrilling plans on how to get the word out. This event features men walking a mile in women’s shoes as a symbolic gesture of how sexual assault is not just a woman’s issue. Working with a local videographer, Our VOICE is recruiting men to show they can “walk the walk” in red high heels and do a little dance to the song “Walk Like a Man.”
Our VOICE is seeking men of all ages who want to show the community they care about the problem of sexual assault. Participants can promote themselves and/or their business by doing their dance at their place of work. Doctors, lawyers, construction workers, tattoo artists, realtors, restaurant workers, the possibilities are endless! We’ll provide the shoes, you provide the dance moves.
Filming will be from Wednesday February 2nd – Friday February 5th. Please contact Robin Payne at Our VOICE (828–713-9281) to set up an appointment for filming at your location. This video will be part of the promotion for the event and will be on the Walk website as well as on YouTube (we believe it can be a big hit)!
Every man has a woman in their life that they can do the “walk” for – their wife, girlfriend, daughter, mother. One in every six women has been the victim of sexual assault; this is one too many. We are asking men to join us as this is not just a woman’s issue.
This is the 9th year of the Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event – the International Men’s March Against Rape, Sexual Assault, and Gender Violence and the first time it is being held in Asheville. Last year there were over 300 such walks across the country. The national website is www.walkamileinhershoes.org
Honorary Chair, Asheville Police Chief Bill Hogan, and City Councilman Cecil Bothwell are just a few of the men who are participating and will be out on the day of the Walk in heels to show their support. Ken Ulmer from Ken & Tammy on Mix 96.5 FM will be holding a contest for listeners to determine which pair of women’s shoes he should wear for the walk!
We are encouraging men, women and children of all ages to participate in this unique community event. It begins at Pritchard Park and makes a mile long loop around downtown. The eye catching scene of men in heels “trying” to walk a mile will be priceless! A website with registration information will be online in the coming weeks – the goal at this time is to get men to participate in the promotion video.
