Volunteer group Asheville Z-Link to clean up sidewalk along Interstate 240

Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell says a group of volunteers will work on clearing the overgrown sidewalk along Interstate 240 that leads to the closed pedestrian bridge that’s received so much attention lately. Here’s the announcement:

Asheville Z-Link will clear the sidewalk to Patton on Saturday, June 26. (Or, clear as much as volunteers are able to achieve.) 8:30 a.m.start time. Come on out and volunteer an hour or so of your weekend to reopen that pedestrian link.

And here’s a link to Asheville ZLink, and a little more about them:

Z-Link is a volunteer sidewalk clean-up effort kicked off by City Council member Cecil Bothwell and Asheville PARC (People Advocating Real Conservancy). We encourage neighbors everywhere to step up and step out to clean the bad stretches in our neighborhood sidewalk systems. Any sidewalk is only as good as its worst link!

Asheville sidewalks have been getting a lot of attention lately between the pedestrian death and a recent story by the Asheville Citizen-Times showing that city funding of city sidewalks has dropped off.

The property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear in front of the property — including trees and foliage above. The City should place notices on these properties — cleanup should be paid for by the property owner. Notifying property owners of their responsibility is a first step.
