Urban News: Future of Asheville’s YMI Cultural Center in doubt

Share

The Urban NewsJohnnie Grant recounts the storied history of the YMI Cultural Center in this story, and notes the future of the institution is in question. Grant notes that the nonprofit doesn’t currently have an executive director, and says that there’s a push on to raise money.

Earlier this year, workers at the Goombay festival complained that they weren’t paid by the YMI. I don’t know if that issue ever got resolved.

In years past, the organization has struggled financially. It sounds like that’s the case again. It’s difficult, though, to determine exactly what the YMI’s financial status is. The organization last filed a required federal tax return in 2009, according to the website Guidestar. And the report that is filed lists zero financial information. It’s blank.

So, who knows what’s really going on with the YMI?
