Things are moving fast now that news is out that Trader Joe’s is planning to build a store on Merrimon Avenue in north Asheville. The operators of existing businesses there are scrambling to cope with news that they’ve got to get out. La Carreta said they were given 120-day notice to move out.

Now this just in: JK Denny of Liberty Tax Service at the corner of Chestnut Street and Merrimon reports:

Jason,
120 Merrimon Tenants received message from Cap Asheville

Today we all got Fed Ex letters saying we have 30 days to vacate effective 7/6/12

When I talked to Freddie White, owner of NY Fashion in the same building at JK, White said he hadn’t yet been given a deadline to move. Now we know. White said he’ll be looking for a new location. And Denny has said the move will be a financial hardship on him.

Here’s a photo gallery of the Trader Joe’s site along Merrimon.

Will someone please inquire about the little building in front of the Walgreens on Merrimon. It’d be nice to see that be something. And maybe La Careta could move next door to the old Northside Grill.
