UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program will celebrate its 10th anniversary and the recent launch of its online literary journal, “The Great Smokies Review,” with a reading by local authors at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16. The free event will be held at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville.
Authors scheduled to read include Michael Beadle, Joy Boothe, Peg Bresnahan, Brian Hart, Betty Holden, Susan Lefler, Linda McCracken and Pam Ruatto. All have contributed work to the first two issues of “The Great Smokies Review.”
UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program has served more than 1,000 students since 2000, offering a variety of seminars and workshops for individuals throughout the Asheville community and surrounding area. A number of students have published books, stories, articles or poems that they developed in class.
“The Great Smokies Review,” the program’s online literary journal, gives students an opportunity to share their work with a wider audience, offering a sample of the multiple voices and quality writing that characterize the program. Each semester, students are selected by their instructors to contribute poems, novel excerpts, short stories and essays. Interviews, observations and essays on craft are also included.
