Press release here:
Saturdays are super this fall at UNC Asheville! Gifted, creative and highly motivated 3rd-8th graders have the opportunity to explore photography, knitting, biology, foreign languages and much more at UNC Asheville’s semi-annual Super Saturday program beginning October 16. Parents can also participate in Super Saturday’s new adult classes, including lessons in yoga and basketry. The program has helped more than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina explore their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus.
Students can choose from over 35 courses open for registration. Students interested in working with their hands can piece together a new book, create their own pottery or sculpt a unique game board and pieces. Science lovers can explore physics with a marshmallow catapult, design their own alien or experiment with lasers. Aspiring performance artists can delve into the skills of circus arts, immerse themselves in the African drum beats, learn the basics of sound production or experience Chinese lion dancing.
UNC Asheville faculty members and upper-level students teach Super Saturday classes, along with public school teachers and other professionals.
Super Saturday courses are generally open to students in grades 3-8; some courses are restricted to certain grades. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays from October 16-November 20. All students are welcome to apply; the registration deadline is October 8. Tuition is $69 for each six-week course. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
