Tidbits on the Asheville media scene

Share

Here’s some of what I’ve heard lately. None of this is confirmed, just what I’ve picked up here and there:

Carolyn Ryan’s reporting job over at WLOS has now been posted, I hear, although I didn’t see it on their web site. Want to be a WLOSer? Apply now.

-The Hendersonville Times-News recently spent $6,000 upgrading newsroom furnishings. Gotta love those cubicles.

-The layoffs this week at the Asheville Citizen-Times (six people) hit the ad production department the hardest. The newspaper and its parent company have slowly been out-sourcing ad production work to India.

-Word on the street is that the C-T Beer Guy, Tony Kiss, has a beer book in the works. Something like “Micro-Brews of North Carolina” or something. Why nobody has done this before now is beyond me. Nobody knows more about brew than Tony. Good luck, dude!

If you want it to stop, call Ingles management and marketing. The main reason for the weekly freebie is to distribute its inserts. If it knows half rot in driveways then it will stop the inserts, and without the needed rev, the AC-T stops printing the useless things. New publisher apparently lives in Biltmore Lake so I doubt they get thrown there either.

I wonder if I could get someone arrested at the C-T for throwing those freebie newspapers they keep tossing in my driveway? I swear in my neighborhood, more than half the people just let the damn things rot in their drive way. I wonder if people lets these things rot in their driveway in the Ramble?

From inside the gates of hell:

communication from Hammer is sadly missing at this tough time. Leaderhsip is needed but, alas, no one knows how. No replacing marketing director which means its staff is now clocking 65-70 hours per week, or let’s just say around 30 freebies. India operation is hit and miss right now with production below par.
At same time, revenues are low, low, low compared to last year, and the year before. That means since the respected Virgil Smith was kindly ousted revenues have faded like Hammer’s hairline. Yikes! You can only cut so much and burn up good talent before the whole house of cards crumbles.
