Here’s some of what WLOSers had Saturday night:
Liquor by the drink debate
WLOSer Kassandra Pride went out to Waynesville to do the story they’ve done like 10 times already – the liquor-by-the-drink debate. The issue is going to be on the March ballot, so Kassandra talked to some people against it, and some people for it.
Kassandra talked to Roger Knight, who said liquor would ruin the town’s “wholesomeness” and “old timey atmosphere.” That’s despite the fact that you can drink beer and wine in the town right now. She talked to people worried about alcoholism and drunk driving.
Then Kassandra talked to a bar owner who said all that money is leaving the town right now, so why not legalize it and keep the money in town? And she talked to people drinking at the bar who said what’s the difference between a beer and a liquor drink – it’s all alcohol, ain’t it?
Mars Hill will also vote on liquor-by-the-drink in March, Kassandra said.
In other news…
There was a trailer fire on Lockwood Lane in West Asheville. Nobody was hurt. Officials said it looked like it started in the computer room and fired up a couple of propane tanks stored under the trailer… Joe Johnson, the former public relations flak for the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, announced his bid for state superintendent of public instruction. He’s a Republican… They’re celebrating the Chinese New Year in Henderson County, and it’s the Year of the Rat. I have such a hard time with that. I keep signing all my checks “Monkey.”… And there was an apple tree sale in Henderson County. Why was all the news coming from Henderson County?
