Everywhere I go these days, I hear about the greatness of the Tunnel Road Ingles. First it was my mom. Then it was a friend or two. Soon, it seemed everyone was talking about the new Ingles.
The new store is gargantuan. It gleams bright and white. It’s a destination. Why? Probably because we haven’t really had a true downtown grocery. Sure, there have been corner markets. And we had the former Ingles on Tunnel, but that was a dark, dank place that everybody called the “ghetto Ingles.”
The new store fills a downtown grocery store need that people didn’t even know they had. But perhaps the best thing about the new Ingles is its salad bar.
The luscious salad bar also fills a need. Now that Souper Sandwich is closed, there really is no place to go for a tasty, affordable salad bar salad. You can get nice salads at the Laughing Seed or Early Girl, but they don’t have bars. You can find salad bars at Earth Fare and Greenlife, but both have lost that new salad bar smell.
The Tunnel Road Ingles salad bar offers your old school standards and fru-fru Ashvegas fare. You’ll find baby corn and boiled eggs alongside the fresh mozzarella balls and fancy stuffed olives. The ambience leaves a little to be desired, but I got a nice seat in the big front window of the seating area and watched people come and go while I munched.
And back to affordability – my big salad and cup of soup cost about $5.50. Now that’s a deal worth going back for.

Copy That!
I can’t get enough of the Tunnel Road Ingles. Their exotic fruit selection is as shockingly magnificent as their salad bar.
You think that Ingles is something? You should travel over to Brevard and check out the one there. It’s a good 25% bigger, has the gas station, the salad bar, the full lunch bistro thing, 4 freezer isles (not just two like the tunnel road location)… I’m telling you, the Brevard store is crazy big.
But the tunnel road location is nice too.
