Some of what’s going on around Asheville:
-What I learned on Twitter today: NASCAR driver Kyle Petty visited Asheville on Sunday. At least that was the plan. I read it on his Twitter page.
-Artist alert: Craggie Brewing is holding a mural contest. Deadline for entries is Aug. 31. Information is here.
-Drink away: Asheville City Council on Tuesday will consider a resolution to grant permits for the sale of beer and wine at the following events. This is a good list of festivities for Asheville folks this fall. As y’all know, we’re a festival kind of town:
– Goombay! Festival on August 28-29, 2009
– Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival on September 6, 2009
– Organicfest on September 13, 2009
– Brewgrass Festival on September 19, 2009
– Asheville Greek Festival on September 25-27, 2009
– Oktoberfest on October, 10, 2009
– Blue Ridge Pride on October 10, 2009
– Just Because You’re Asheville on October 24, 2009
I didn’t know what “Just Because You’re Asheville” is. Found the Web site, though, and it looks like a free festival down on Lexington Avenue featuring Keller Williams, EOTO and Josh Phillips Folk Festival Galactic, Larry Keel and DubConscious. Cool.
-Phoning it in: U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, like many congressmen across the country, is back home on break from Washington and planning town hall meetings. But rather than face the wrath of voters in person, he’s taking the same tact as some of his colleagues by holding call-in town hall meetings. The Hendersonville Times-News explains.
Shuler did meet last week with group of local Republicans to talk about health care reform, which he’ll be voting against, it sounds like. The meeting went well, according to Erika Franzi.

What are you doing following Kyle Petty’s Twitter page? 😉
That ‘Just Because You’re Asheville’ info was from last year…this year’s bill has Galactic, Larry Keel, DubConscioius, and best of all, local group Soulgrass Rebellion. Full disclosure–they’re my pals. Free show, Oct. 24, down on Lexington.
