The Ashvegas Hot Sheet: A new Apple store, a new Tupelo Honey, a new comedy club and more unchecked rumors

Share

Here’s your Ashvegas Hot Sheet, chock-full today of what I think I’ll start calling “rumors of news”:

– New comedy club: Actually, there is more to this than mere rumor. The fine folks who love comedy and have worked hard to bring quality stan-up comedy to Asheville are preparing to launch the Funny Business Comedy Club later this year. I hear it will be located beneath Steak & Wine in the old S&W building on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville. Funny Business has a Facebook page here. Follow Funny Business on Twitter here.

– Tupelo Honey south? The Asheville Food News blog reports that the much beloved Tupelo Honey restaurant in downtown Asheville is preparing to announce that they will be opening a new location in south Asheville, perhpaps somewhere close to the newly opened south location of the Thirsty Monk Pub. Why is it that south Asheville has to have a copy of everything cool in downtown Asheville?

– Apple store coming to Asheville? I hear on Twitter that a new Apple store will be located at 755 Biltmore Avenue. Can anyone confirm?

– Chocolate Lounge expanding? I also hear on Twitter that the French Broad Chocolate Lounge is expanding in its location on Lexington Avenue. Can anyone confirm?

– Avetts week: Charlotte Observer writer Tommy Tomlinson plans to publish a big piece in the newspaper this Sunday about the Avett Brothers, the band I love from Concord who will have its major-label debut on Sept. 29 will the release of I and Love and You. He’s blogging about the Avetts all week here. Awesome.

Hey Ashe!

Here’s an article I wrote about French Broad Chocolate Lounge, including details on their expansion, on July 22nd – http://hendersonvilleepicurean.blogspot.com/2009/07/french-broad-more-than-chocolate-shop.html

Is it an actual Apple brand store? There’s been an Apple-only dealer store looking around for retail space in town, not actual Apple.

Of all the places to locate an Apple store in this city, that’s gotta be one of the strangest. I have to think Apple is smarter than that.

Its true about the Village Antiques spitting their space for the new apple store. Funny thing was, the owners were looking to go south first. 🙂

"Why is it that south Asheville has to have a copy of everything cool in downtown Asheville?"

Because, as the patrons at the new Thirsty Monk told me on opening night when I popped by, there’s not much else to do round there that doesn’t involve cookie-cutter chains. Plus, it’s a fair trek from that part of Asheville to downtown.

I really hope the Tupelo Honey rumor is true – that would be divine! I love that local businesses are expanding into south Asheville, and I hope this is a trend that continues.

The Chocolate Lounge is indeed expanding. From talking to Dan and Jael, the second floor will be additional seating and eventually the third floor will be the kitchen. Last I heard they were waiting for final painting on the second floor. If you haven’t been by recently, they’ve added awnings to the three stories that look fabulous.

I also heard that Jeff Green is no longer with Iwanna

The alleged location is where Biltmore Village Antiques is currently located … doesn’t seem like the best spot in town ….

Why is it that south Asheville has to have a copy of everything cool in downtown Asheville?

Because that is where more customer base is. Look, I am sure they are just looking for steady business not just tourist business that goes up and down with the economy. South Asheville can still use a few more businesses. We lost Luella’s BBQ which was fantastic, so that opens up an opportunity for someone. 12 Bones is off the beaten path so it misses a large part of the South Asheville cash flow. Other businesses needed in South Asheville, well the list is very long. Most of the businesses that are in S. Asheville don’t have any competition, and they need it. Competition makes businesses work harder and keep their places clean. It also means lower prices.
