Summit for Baby Boomers coming April 14

The summit, called Boomers and Beyond: A Summit On Business and Aging, will address different and new industries emerging from retirement areas. The summit is organized by AdvantageWest, Land-of-Sky Regional Council, N.C. Center for Creative Retirement at UNC-Asheville, N.C. Center for Health and Aging and Western Carolina University.

The speakers will include Glenn Ruffenach, editor of Encore, a section of the Wall Street Journal aimed at consumers over 50 years of age. Dr. William Thompkins, a professor at WCU Institute for the Economy and the Future, will speak on retiree migration patterns and how the boomer population is affecting the consumer and labor force economy of the region. Tom Tveidt, director of research for the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, will talk about the changing income of the region because of retirees. Dr. Harry R. Moody, director of academic affairs of AARP, will speak on marketing to older consumers. Other speakers include WCU Chancellor Dr. John Brando; Dr. Teck Penland, president and CEO of Mountain Area Health and Education Center; Chancellor of UNC-A Dr. Anne Ponder; and Wilma Sherrill, special assistant to the chancellor for external relations at UNC-Asheville.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at University of North Carolina at Asheville. The cost is $50 for early registration. The cost is $20 for students.
