A group of revelers hit the streets of Ashvegas Saturday night to bring a little N’awlins Mardi Gras flavor to our fair town. The group of 30 or so folks donned funky costumes, uncorked a barrage of whoops and hollers and zipped gold and emerald beads at passersby.
The group included several New Orleans transplants, some who wanted to celebrate just to celebrate in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The party had a distinct Katrina feel – one couple sported hats that looked like a blue tarped rooftop; another guy had a George W. Bush mask that he subjected to any number of indignities. It was all in good fun, of course.
The Munky Doux Krewe, which is what the Ashvegas group called themselves, started at Jack of the Wood by crowning a king and queen, then paraded around town, spent a few minutes dancing around the Vance Monument, then headed down to the Orange Peel for the rest of party.
Happy Mardi Gras!
