An anonymous tipster tells me that a couple dozen UPS drivers/workers in the Asheville area have been laid off. I do not have this information confirmed, but this source sounded knowledgeable.
UPS each year hires extra workers, then lays them off after the Christmas rush. But the 30 or so lay offs happening now at UPS go beyond the seasonal cut, according to the source, who said that some long-time drivers were handed pink slips. The other move that UPS has taken is to cut workers in the loading area, and move some drivers back to that area to keep them on.
The source tells me that the past few years during the holiday season, UPS drivers would be so busy on their routes that they wouldn’t return home until 11 p.m. This year, driver’s are done at 5 or 6 p.m. That’s a big difference.
