Update here from awesome Asheville food writer Hanna Raskin:

I wanted to share with you exclusive photos from the National Country Ham Association annual competition held at the Grove Park Inn last night.

While there were almost twice as many smoked as unsmoked hams submitted, North Carolina (where smoking’s still a rarirty) had a fine showing, with Goldsboro’s Wayco Old Southern Hams claiming the unsmoked crown and finishing second to Tripp Country Ham in the smoked division.

The ham clan spent the day in Boone yesterday, touring the plant that produces the ham slices for biscuits at Hardee’s and Bojangles.

Over 95% of pigs in United States today are raised on factory farms. They spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy warehouses, under constant stress from the intense confinement and denied everything that is natural to them.
