The rumors are flying around between the Asheville Twitterati that President Obama is vacationing in Western North Carolina. The Mountain Xpress checked it out and found no truth to the rumor. Still, it persists.
A quick look at the president’s schedule shows that he’s a busy guy up in Washington today:
Highlights:
10:15 a.m. Delivers remarks at White House Conference on America’s Great Outdoors at the Interior Department. Media enter C St., N.W. between 18th & 19th Streets. Pooled for TV and still cameras. Open for correspondents, but must RSVP.
11 a.m. Meets with his national security team on Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Situation Room. Closed press.
12:45 p.m. Lunch with Vice President Biden.
1:30 p.m. Meets with the Presidents Economic Recovery Advisory Board (PERAB) in the Roosevelt Room on issues including job creation, the Presidents proposal to double the number of exports over the next five years, the need to pass strong financial reform legislation, and the momentum behind reform efforts currently in the Senate. He will specifically address the steps to strengthen oversight of derivatives. Pool spray at the top of the meeting. The entire meeting will be streamed live at www.WhiteHouse.gov/live.
I’m not sure what the president’s schedule is for the weekend. But when he was campaigning in Asheville back in 2008, he did seem to enjoy the area. That lunch at 12 Bones seemed to make an impression. I guess we’ll wait and see.
How cool would it be to have a kick-down between Chuck Norris and President Obama this weekend?

The President has little reason to visit Western NC when he has Camp David in the mountains of Maryland at his disposal.
Camp David has very similar terrain and vastly superior accommodations compared to anything in WNC.
The Presidential vacation time is generally always in August.
President Obama is scheduled to fly to Warsaw this weekend to attend the funeral and memorial service for the Polish President killed in the air accident in Russia. His trip is still on at this time, but may be impacted because of the volcanic ash situation in Europe.
