Press release here:
When World Rivers Day began in 2005, founder Mark Angelo dreamed that people all across the world would spend the day picnicking and listening to music beside their local rivers. On Sunday, September 26, RiverLink will be throwing a party to encompass all the activities Angelo had envisioned for the day. RiverLink’s World Rivers Day celebration will be held at the RiverLink Sculpture and Performance Plaza, 119 Riverside Drive, across the street from the Cotton Mill Studios.
Participants are encouraged to drop off a covered dish, lawn chairs, a picnic blanket and perhaps a bottle of celebratory bubbly at the Sculpture Plaza starting at 10:30. At 11:00, the Asheville Outdoor Center will take the first 30 river rafters (space is limited, so please come early) upstream to the AOC to canoe downstream for a donation of $10 ($5 goes back to RiverLink). The potluck lunch will begin at 1:00, including hot dogs provided by RiverLink, while Executive Director Karen Cragnolin gives a short speech on the River District and its history.
From 1:30-2:30 musician Mark Guest with play soft jazz while families and friends draw a river or local Asheville scene as part of RiverLink’s “Neighborhood Big Draw.” Some art supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. A sampling of the art produced during the Big Draw will be exhibited in the Holly Library on the AB-Tech campus following the event.
