As always, there’s lots to keep up with on the Asheville restaurant scene. Let’s chow down:
Earlier this week, the rumor mill cranked up over the much-loved La Paz restaurant in Biltmore Village after a member of the local Twitterati tweeted that La Paz was closing. Mojito-bro didn’t offer anything else, but soon others chimed in: La Paz was changing owners and would get a new name.
The new owners, according to the grapevine, are the folks who own Neo Burrito. They’re going to rename La Paz something like Neo, and they’re going to install a “living roof” on the place. At least that’s what I hear. Will Biltmore Village be down with that?
If you’re not familiar with Neo Burrito, the joint on Patton Avenue is the only place in town where you can buy your grow lights and composting toilet while waiting for your Mexi.
Over on Biltmore Avenue, the Temptations bar is all boarded up and word on the street is that Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is moving in. I’ve never heard of Jimmy Johns, so I don’t know from whatever. You likey?
The somewhat sad thing is that that space – a primo spot on Biltmore Avenue – used to be home to one of downtown Asheville’s best listening rooms. The old Be Here Now was the place to be and be seen back in the day. Now its gonna be home to a hoagie shop. O well.
Last but not least, I’ll remind folks that I told you more than a month ago that Asheville is getting yet another Papas and Beer location. This one will be down in Arden, on Hendersonville Road.

I love Jimmy John’s! It may seem like nothing special on the menu, but when you want a sub at lunch that is fast, cheap, and very tasty, this is it. The subs just seem fresher than they do anywhere else.
We had a Jiimmy Johns in Spartanburg and I loved it!! The bread is so fresh! I hope that they will deliver! 🙂
Hey CNorthAvl: Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I will take Jimmy John’s over those overpriced, underwhelming establishments any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Really? Just looked at the Jimmy John’s menu and it doesn’t look very…unique? Interesting? Looks like pretty straighforward subs. Not sure that is the best choice for that location in A’ville. I think I’ll stick with City Bakery and Laurey’s!

Neo, owned by Zak Yancey, bought out the westside Urban a couple of years ago, along with their recipes. Zak is expanding the menu like wow, working on buying local meat, including trying muy authentico organ specials, and sells seed starts, grow lights, and other greenie things to supplement the business. They get alot of their veggies from their on-site garden, and compost all their dishes. Also, they are catering our rehearsal dinner.
Jimmy John’s is a sub shop…not bad…and their motto is "Subs so fast…you’ll freak." They will fit in well in Asheville.
Jimmy John’s is the jam. Seriously, it’s about time Asheville got one. Now if only we could get a Vietnamese restaurant then I would have absolutely no reason to go to Charlotte.
Yes, but I still don’t understand the difference between Urban Burrito and Neo Burrito. Who will enlighten me?
