The Hendersonville Times-News has published an interesting story looking at possible Republican contenders to U.S. Rep. Health Shuler in the 2010 elections. You can read the full story here.

The upshot is that several Republicans who have considered runs have backed away. Spence Campbell, who lost in the Republican primary last year against Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower, says he’s not running. Mumpower has not ruled out another run. N.C. Sen. Tom Apodoca of Hendersonville appears hesitant. Former Henderson County Sheriff George Erwin is disinterested.

Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman is one potential candidate who appears to be sizing up his chances.

“I have an interest in a couple of positions, and that is one of them,” said Newman, who is not running for re-election. “I will take a definite position later this year.”

We’ll have to keep an eye on him.
