The Asheville Civic Center has said over the past few years that putting ice in is an expensive proposition that’s taken on a year-by-year basis. It looks like this is the year it goes away. That would mean none of the popular public ice skating periods, and no ice for the kids and adults who participate in the Asheville Hockey League.
Here’s an e-mail from the local league:
At this time it is unlikely there will be ice hockey this winter at the Asheville Civic Center.
The AHL is always investigating avenues of interest for ice hockey in the community and will certainly keep all AHL members up to date on any opportunities for the sport that may become available within the local area. Until such time, the closest youth and adult ice programs available to this area are located at thePavilion Recreation Complexin Greenville, SC. Youth Programs (both house & travel) have final registrations this Sat, Aug 22, – with an open house at the Pavilion – house Upstate Sports,http://www.upstatesports.net/, and travel Greenville Hockey,http://www.greenvillehockey.com/
The AHL will also look at putting together a High School Hockey Team for the winter season, with possible practices in Greenville SC. Youth players of High School age who are interested should emailJim Gelleny,gathinc@msn.com.
If you have any questions please feel free to drop me us an email or contact Asheville Parks & Recreation.
Sincerely,
Asheville Hockey League
