Progress Energy: We’re prepared for winter storm

Press release here:

With 2-4 inches of snow in the forecast for Monday night and Tuesday morning, Progress Energy Carolinas crews are on alert, but the company is not anticipating widespread power outages from the winter weather.

Crews are prepared to respond to whatever Mother Nature brings. Forecasts call for much of the company’s North Carolina service area to get snow as a front moves eastward across the state. Some customers in northeastern South Carolina also could get snow. Snowfall amounts are not expected to exceed 4 inches in Progress Energy’s service area.

Progress Energy encourages customers to avoid unnecessary travel and to be cautious around the home as winter precipitation can create unsafe conditions. No large-scale outages are expected, but the weather could create scattered power outages. Customers should report power outages by calling Progress Energy’s 24-hour customer service center at 1-800-419-6356.

Last week’s Arctic cold front brought high customer demand for electricity. In fact, customers in Progress Energy’s Western Region, which includes Asheville and the surrounding area, set a record for peak electricity demand, surpassing the previous record by nearly 7 percent.

Temperatures this week are not expected to drop to the levels experienced last week. And the company does not anticipate additional peak-demand records this week.
