POTUS on the golf course in Asheville: Golf cart skills and getting a gimmie

From the TheHill.com’s Blog Briefing Room:

President Obama and the First Lady are in Asheville, N.C. this weekend for a short vacation, and Obama is taking the opportunity to squeeze in some golf.

Obama hit the links both today and yesterday, according to pool reports.

In fact, golfers in the press corps may have been a little surprised to see this sentence in last night’s report: “POTUS wheeled his golf cart onto the green, with Whittaker. Your pooler counted at least nine golf carts in POTUS’s entourage.”

Driving one’s cart onto the green is a major faux paus. But the world was quickly made right again when a correction was sent out.

“POTUS did not wheel his golf cart *onto* the green, but *near* the green. Apologies.”

And from the Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire blog:

Friday evening, Obama warmed up at the driving range before golfing the back nine. Reporters holed up in the clubhouse were brought to the 10th green for a rare, 5-minute glance at his evolving golf skills.

It was no ordinary outing. Carol Lee of Politico wrote in her pool report to the White House press corps that she counted at least nine golf carts in the Obama entourage. Others in the foursome: Chicago friends Eric Whittaker and Marty Nesbitt, along with Marvin Nicholson, the White House trip director.

Whittaker went first, failing to make the shot. Nesbitt followed with similar results. Obama took several warm-up swings before hitting the ball short of the cup; he put down a marker and picked up the ball. Nicholson was up next, but reporters couldn’t tell how he did.

Nesbitt and Whittaker putted again, and didn’t appear to make their shots.

Obama took a gimmie, but pooler Lee reported that some observers suggested it was a lag putt.
