Asheville Citizen-Times Editor Phil Fernandez is front-and-center when news about his newspaper is happy-happy-joy-joy. Here he is back in September, emceeing the Citizen-Times Half-Marathon.
But when the news is bad, Fernandez can be neither seen nor heard. I worked with Phil for years. I like Phil. I didn’t always agree with some of his decisions as managing editor and now editor, and I told him so. But that’s par for the course in the news biz.
So Phil, as a former colleague and hopefully still a friend, I’m asking you to come out and tell us — what’s the future of the Citizen-Times look like to you as we leave behind a tumultuous ’08 and steam ahead into 2009?

Why no news about Phil leaving the Citizen-Times?
I worked for Phil in Atlanta. I’m glad to see that his wardrobe hasn’t changed. I also suspect his other traits haven’t changed – a stand-up guy and a fine newspaperman.
And as I once said to the Publisher and that Ad Director, don’t let the door hit you were the good lord split you.. LOL Do I really need to show you two the door. Start packing.
Hernandez is also on the ropes with HQ editorial exec at Gannett since he is so closely linked to Randy Hammer. Hammer has been seriously damaged by Ihne’s lawsuit and won’t last long with the company. Hernandez is also on the short list to be "kicked to the curb" as folks here like to say. The C-T’s days as a stand alone paper are numbered.
As for his outfit, well the above pic says it all.
Phil’s my bud but damn, we gotta get him on "What Not to Wear", STAT! I mean, white crew socks with shorts?!?!? Come on, Phil!
