Is the petitionn drive calling for a referendum on partisan elections nearing success? As we devolve into reporting on what other blogs say other bloggers are saying, we’ll note that over at the notthomaswolfe blog, blogger Tim Peck of the Et in Arcadia ego blog writes that the petition drive is 10 verified signatures away from meeting the mark of 5,000 signatures. The deadline is Monday for the Board of Elections to verify the signatures.
Asheville City Council voted recently to move to partisan elections, and the filing period for candidates to file as either Democrats or Republicans just ended.
If the Let Asheville Vote petition drive succeeds, the elections for Asheville City Council will revert to non-partisan. That means that the election filing period will have to be re-opened to allow non-partisan candidates to file. Tim Peck has written that he will be an unaffiliated candidate, as will local restaurant owner Dwight Butner, Christopher “Brother Christopher” Chiaromonte, and Lindsey Simerly, who we don’t know.
Interesting. Very, very interesting.
And speaking of the candidates for City Council, we want to remind you that “You are invited to the kick-off reception for the Citizens to Re-Elect Councilman Newman.” That’s what it says on the Brownie Newman blog. Newman, along with Bryan Freeborn, Holly Jones and Robin Cape, voted for the change to partisan elections. Newman’s most recent proposal is to set up a citizens council to examine the whole issue of partisan elections.
So why not come out and tell Brownie what you think?
