On the streets of Ashvegas: Atheist

Share

The story about Conferederate flag proponent and former Asheville NAACP chapter president H.K. Edgerton noting that new Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell shouldn’t be allowed to hold public office because he’s an atheist has been getting a lot of play lately. The Asheville Citizen-Times‘ story on the topic made it to the front page of reddit.com today.

Personally, I see it as a non-story. What do you think?

Here’s the photo I shot of Cecil getting sworn in on Tuesday.

Hah! Asheville Dweller shows yet again how ‘naive’ he/she/it really is.
I said nothing about what HK has made his point and purpose in life – merely that he is far more fascinating than Cecil Bothwell being an atheist.

Before you continue wagging your misinformed tongue- recognize that you don’t know much if anything at all about me or my studies. My senior thesis for my history major was on three black civil war soldiers executed & buried (right about where the new Chancellor’s house is being built) on UNC-A property. I could go on for hours about the CSA & African-American heritage, and even interviewed HK whilst doing the paper.

I revise my original comment, in that HK was the only -currently living- southern black man ever to willingly dress up in a CSA uniform & wave the stars & bar. Even at the Civil War reenactments that I went to in High School and early college, a man such as HK is a rare breed of bird to come across in this day and age.

Yawn.

H.K. Edgerton is diving the point home that the south had Black units in the civil war, again JBO shows how much they really don’t know. Its a piece of history that some tend to forget or ignore or in JBO case be extremely naive about.

I’ll have some of whatever H.K. is smoking. 🙂

Just saying December 10, 2009 - 1:29 pm

H.K. Edgerton is doing it for publicity. As for religious preference, who cares it’s none of your business so go back to your recliner and keep watching Glen Beck.

Don’t forget Glen Beck told you to go out and buy gold today. Remember his golden rule is is to live by the three Gs. God, Guns, and Gold!!!!!

Idiot!!!

The guy in the white robes pulling the giant cross hasn’t been spotted in a few years. The guy who ran for city council in his g-string is gone. Only HK is still with us to help make Asheville truly weird.

It’s Ashvegas. It will get bigger. Sizzle-Sizzle!

No doubt that Russian Rocket seen over Norway last night as a UFO made it to Mr H.K. Edgerton House and wipe out his confederate flag along with his King James [The Bible for Republican Sissies]

Are you saying you can’t follow the Golden Rule and be an atheist? It just means you don’t believe in any gods, not that you are reluctant to participate in mutual consideration with fellow human beings. Not believing in magical beings does not make you an anarchist.

My wife said she heard a story about it on NPR.

JBO December 10, 2009 - 12:30 am

Non-story.

First – Cecil is not a full-out atheist, he believes in & follows the Golden Rule philosophy – not just random anarchist lack of spirituality.

Second – Even if this turned into an actual issue – it would never stand up in court. The US Constitution’s rights trumps North Carolina’s state constitution. End of story.

Three – Covering the eccentricity of H.K. Edgerton, the only southern black man ever to willingly dress up in a CSA uniform & wave the stars & bars – is a much more interesting story.

Edgerton, along with nitwits like Palin, Orly Taitz, and the Teabaggers are what’s wrong with America. Ignoring them, claiming them a ‘non-story’, is, IMO, a mistake. Pointing out how out of step, divorced from reality, and unrepresentative their odd ball views are is very important. Silence in the face of hate is always wrong. Take the effort, stand up against ignorance and malevolence.

I think it is amazing how much ink HKE can generate with his bizarre POV’s

It’s getting bigger… The Washington Post just picked up on it. And they plugged his Billy Graham book. Looks like H.K. and the other kooks are gonna make Cecil some money. Maybe there is a god? Link: http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/undergod/2009/12/atheist_swears_affirms_oath_in_nc.html
