Here’s a great note from loyal reader Carolyn, who points to a great NY Times piece about Asheville musician Evan Hill. Wonderful. From Carolyn:
Just thought I’d bring to your attention an article in the New York Times Opinionator column ‘The Score.’ My son, Evan Hill, who is an Asheville musician/songwriter with a B.S. in Music Technology from UNC-A, was one of four selected for a feature on interactive web music composition. His version of one of the four piano etudes by composer and Georgia Tech professor Jason Freeman was chosen from nearly a hundred entries. Evan was interviewed for the article about his composition and you can read it, as well as hear and watch it played by a classical pianist here: Compose Your Own, Part 2 – Opinionator Blog – NYTimes.com .
Evan performs and composes as Wilson the Rocker in Asheville. You can hear his songwriting on his myspace page: www.myspace.com/wilsontherocker. … Evan’s too modest (and busy at the moment) to toot his own horn, but as his mom, I feel entitled!
Thanks for a great blog about Asheville!
Carolyn Hill
From the Opinionator:
Evan’s thoughts on his etude:
Being a songwriter, I began with what I felt like were the more “pop” elements of the score and created a loose musical narrative around those ideas. The score proved to be surprisingly flexible to my whims. Arranging Jason’s piece was like playing with just a few building blocks: sure, my choices were limited, but I was still able to create something that feels like my own.
