Mr. Fish enjoyed a long and distinguished career at Mars Hill College. It began with teaching and coaching in the physical education department from 1958 until 1965. He also worked in the summers as an assistant with the buildings and grounds superintendent. In 1967 when the superintendent retired he was appointed Director of the Physical Plant. He directed the maintenance of a $40,000,000 assortment of buildings, grounds and utilities that was a $2,000,000 per year business.

In June 1986 he took a special assignment as director for extensive remodeling of the college’s Wall Science Building. Finally, when that task was completed, he retired after 28 years of superior service. In recognition of his service and accomplishments at the college the board of trustees presented him a Distinguished Service Award.

Mr. Fish’s life in Mars Hill was not all hard work and demanding responsibilities. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He will be remembered as a loving and giving neighbor and friend. He was for many years an enthusiastic member of the North Carolina Civitans serving a term as Secretary Treasurer of the western district. After retirement he became a proud member of the Shriners. He was extremely proud of his Shriner’s Club and Mountain Buggies of Asheville. He was a loyal member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church for more than 60 years serving as a deacon and in many other capacities. He also served his community as chief of the Mars Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Scout Master for the Boy Scout Troop of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Fish was a great guy! I first met him when I was 13 years old and I served with him in the Oasis Mountain Buggies unit of the Shriners Hospital for the burned and crippled child. He loved those kids. Fish will be missed by me and my family.
