New film festival, the Ricochet Film Festival, coming to Asheville in September

In the midst of all the current talk about the future of the Asheville Film Festival and the announcement of a new film festival set to debut in 2011, we now have word of yet another film festival scheduled for this September.

Mountain Xpress reporter David Forbes, who is reporting on Asheville City Council and its film festival discussions, notes in a recent Xpress blog post that he’s helping to organize the Ricochet Film Festival, scheduled for Sept. 17-19 at the Carolina Theater on Hendersonville Road. Forbes in the past has worked on the board advising the city on the Asheville Film Festival. Michael Knox, a recruiter for the Asheville Film Festival and the co-founder of Modern Film Fest in Kannapolis, N.C., is also helping organize the new event.

From the Richochet Film Festival’s page on Facebook:

Ricochet Film Festival’s inaugural lineup will include a screening of the classic George Romero zombie flick, “Night of the Living Dead,” which will include a zombie make-up contest. Organizers screened “Night of the Living Dead” during last year’s Modern Film Fest at the Gem Theatre, in Kannapolis, N.C. The crowd loved the movie and we hope to have a great turn out in Asheville.

Ricochet Film Festival organizers are looking for Asheville filmmakers who would be interested is being a part of discussion panels held during the film festival, Sept. 17-19. Please contact us if you are a local filmmaker interested in being on the panel.

Back to the Asheville Film Festival: I noted last week that it looks unlikely that the Asheville Film Festival will be held this year. A final decision on that is set to be made tonight at Asheville City Council. Council is also set to approve its budget for next year, a spending plan that does not include funding for a film festival.

Meantime, a local couple has announced that they’re planning the Asheville International Film Festival for September 2011.
