More on what’s happening at 5 Walnut St. in downtown Asheville

Here’s a friendly note from Matt Logan, who is overseeing the renovations at 5 Walnut St. in downtown Asheville. I posted a photo yesterday after I saw that the place was abuzz with construction work. Here’s Matt’s note:

Hey, my name is Matt Logan and I am renovating the building you reported on at 5 Walnut St. Thanks for positive comments, I’m a loyal reader of your blog, it’s great.

Things are kicking into high gear and I am building a small wine bar called 5 Walnut in one of the retail spaces. Hope to open by early December. A very casual, comfortable little bar with up to 50 wines by the glass and local beers on tap, local snacks on menu and great music from the speakers. More of an Asheville friendly anti “wine bar” wine bar. haha. It’s one of the best people watching locations in town with activity buzzing.

The beautiful bar you saw is being built by my cousin Peter White out of maple slabs from Spruce Pine. I am also teaming up with Black Mountain College Museum and Art Center to do a public art project on the wall along Carolina Lane.

There are a lot of great places like Sazerac and Lab opening soon which will make this one of the coolest downtown scenes in the country. It’s very exciting and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it.

Thanks,

Matt

Best of luck! Im not the only one looking forward to the next exciting chapter in Asheville’s story.

For each tourist, for each of their dollars, I am grateful. It will support a whole host of businesses in the area.

I get the same feeling. It’s like Asheville has turned its economic hopes to tourism and alcohol. You can’t throw a rock without hitting a hip new bar, and it’s kind of disappointing.

Weird….I lived in the third floor of that building for a year back in 1999. Saw all sorts of car break ins from my window in the lot below. FINALLY, something is being done with the building. I love it. Although, I do miss the days of a $585 (all-inclusive) rent in downtown.

Another Bar in down town . . .. Yet another, I wish them luck but this over saturation of the SAME thing isn’t going to help the economy downtown. Just like the Coffee Bars that are now closing up, just like the Bookstores that came and went, its oversaturation.

I do wish them all good luck in their adventure.
