More on Gannett lay-offs: 1,400 to get cut, but no more furloughs

A few more details are dribbling out as Gannett employees across the country and here at the Asheville Citizen-Times await the July 8 announcement of who will get laid off.

Lots of people are writing about a Gannett memo to all its newspapers from a company executive. The exec states that 1,400 employees company wide will be hit. The announcement will be complete by July 9, which matches with earlier news that the lay-offs would be announced July 8. The memo notes that there won’t be any more furloughs the rest of the year, which is some good news for employees.

In the last round of lay-offs, when Gannett cut about 3,000 jobs, I think that translated to about a dozen Citizen-Times employees getting cut. Extrapolating, can we then expect to see about five or six jobs lost at C-T this time around?

ACT could get harder than you would expect. Its possible further consolidation could reduce ACT to about 200 carriers. Greenville doing all the administrative work that absolutely doesn’t need to be done on site (billing, advertising, etc).

Then again, that’s worst case scenario.

So maybe 5-6 people. Maybe none.
