More blog bits: Ashvegas City Council doings, a new city farmer’s market and such

Share

The October primary for Ashvegas City Council elections is not that far off, so we’ll be seeing more and more candidate news as we move through the fall. Here are few tidbits related to candidates, council and other randomness:

Brownie Newman saves the world, one light bulb at a time
Newman, who is up for re-election this year, has devised a campaign to prevent the release of more than one million pounds of air pollution in a single day. His campaign bought 2,500 CFL lightbulbs, with the goal of handing out at least 2,000 to Ashvegas residents on Sept. 15, which has been dubbed Asheville Energy Independence Day. Brownie’s a Democrat. But remember – this is a nonpartisan election.

Selena sign
We spotted somebody who looked a lot like Chad Nesbitt putting up a big sign for council candidate Selena Sullivan on Haywood Road on Saturday. She’s a Republican. But remember – this is a nonpartisan election.

Breaking news: Bellamy’s got a big ego
Hey, we’re just telling you what everybody’s talking about.

Ellington up for review
The plan for a giant high-rise building proposed for downtown Ashvegas will be before City Council on Tuesday. The design has passed the local Downtown Commission board and the planning and zoning board. At issue – whether or not the building is too damn big for little ol’ Ashvegas.

A new city market
There will be a meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27 to get public reaction to plans for a new farmer’s market proposed by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, which promotes locally grown food and healthy foods.

We’ve not been paying close attention to this project. Is this just a glorified tailgate market, which already abound in Ashvegas? If not, how will it be different? Anybody with dets, please e-mail us.

Art market
There will be a Mountain Artist Community Market on Montford, in the parking lot of the Buyer’s Agent, on Sept. 29. Check it.

Speaking of artists, don’t forget John Waters
John Waters will be speaking at UNCA on Sept. 19.
