Moogfest open thread: Comments, observations, and wishes for 2011

Share

Moogfest 2010 is in the books. It was, by all accounts, weekend full of magnificent music. So now the question is: what about next year? It’s never too early to consider, so let’s start dreaming now, while still basking in the afterglow.

Who would you like to see at Moogfest 2011? Are there organizational changes that you think should be made? What else about the weekend? Comment away. (I’ll be out in Sylva this afternoon, but I’ll be checking back as frequently as I can.)

I just watched 2006. Incredible. How about Kansas or Jethro Tull? Showing my age probably. Still…..it would be great to see either.

i wasn't lucky enough to attend but stayed busy checking the website and reading blogs and such.(almost went! but work sucks). I know its the moogfest but asheville caters to more natural sounding styles of music ie bluegrass, newgrass, and folk/southern rock shit. having said that maybe a few more bands that have that feel. Fleet foxes, blitzen trapper, bon iver, maybe even a beirut. two headliners along these lines could be Drive by truckers, and or Band of horses both have ties to the south. but anyway more electric sounding bands that would be nice to see there are
golden filter
tobacco
pictureplane
discovery
washed out
delorean
the XX(electric enough)
Das Rascist
M83
fever Ray/or the Knife
Ratatat
JJ
pinback uses alot of synth stuff so them too.
Gauntlet hair is my new fav, i think they'd be good. Any repeats from last year would be alright with me as well. Definitley LCD,arcade fire, and any huge names mentioned if possible but what is this coachella?
PS Beach house would be awesome too. good look stu

Shabbaz Palaces, out of Seattle.

Stak February 16, 2011 - 12:22 am

King MEZ. Up and coming srtist out of NC.

Mixing local acts would give the show a nice touch though. LCD Soundsystem would be great. Prodigy would be over the top. Maybe the roots would add a good flavor to it. What about Kanye or Cee-lo. I feel those to could give a broad range of genres just in their performances alone.

The Man February 15, 2011 - 1:07 am

Miike Snow
Morcheeba
Neon Indian (Yes, again)
DJ Shadow
The Octopus Project (Yes, again)
Wax Tailor
Backini
Animal Collective/Panda Bear
Kid Koala
Royksopp

Add those to the list and it'll be the best Moogfest yet.

aside from the great acts mentioned so far ( Radiohead and Daft Punk! we can pipe dream can't we) Nine Inch Nails would be perfect. I think a lot of people may be surprised at how arty and experimental they are. We saw them on their 08 Light in the Sky tour and they were fantastic.

Jay November 5, 2010 - 5:58 pm

Stereolab (Moogs galore!), Ladytron, M83, Ratatat and The Knife (if you can coax them into it).

Also, I second Stormy's suggestions above 🙂

In addition, keep up the lesser known bands that can get some good exposure. I'm glad to have discovered some great ones like Shout Out Out Out Out.

Elena November 4, 2010 - 6:24 pm

BASSNECTAR and ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

and Jonsi again please. He was too amazing to not be able to see again.

First, the organizational suggestions given by Clark are excellent! Secondly, musician suggestions… Portishead, Chemical Brothers, My Morning Jacket, Underworld, DJ Shadow, Air, Aphex Twin & PLEASE bring back Bonobo!

E November 2, 2010 - 7:30 pm

deadmau5, Flaming Lips, LCD soundsystem, Andre 300 ( Dungeon Family)… I am sure I will think of more later!! The comment about the Camping is a good idea! I did camp out and it was great!

potpie November 2, 2010 - 1:21 pm

change the name to MacFest…and how about some bands that someone over 21 will recognize…

Orbit DVD November 2, 2010 - 2:01 am

Not to have it on Halloween. Weekend before or after would be great.

Rush still uses Moog products on stage.

mooger November 1, 2010 - 8:48 pm

Daft Punk, LCD soundsystem, Trent Reznor, Holy F*ck, The Kills.

Jennifer S. November 1, 2010 - 8:34 pm

Ooh, the Books, good idea Clark! And how did Mountain Man get there? I AM NOT COMPLAINING!

The Cars in the Devo Nostalgia spot. (They reunited last week!)

Bill from Asheville November 1, 2010 - 7:07 pm

Portishead, Prodigy…..but you got to bring back Mutemath, Pretty Lights and Massive Attack!

Moogfan November 1, 2010 - 6:37 pm

How about mmmm ummm more Moogs and less computers!

Jawboxer John November 1, 2010 - 6:23 pm

How about Meat Beat Manifesto? See Moog-the documentary. They are the one's that "jam" with Clouser.

Derek November 1, 2010 - 5:29 pm

I definitely want to Phoenix there for next year! I loved the entire weekend!

ashevillain November 1, 2010 - 4:25 pm

Wishes for next year: Daft Punk, Portishead, Gorillaz, Herbie Hancock, Cee-Lo Green and Andre 3000, Telepath, STS9, My Morning Jacket and Toubab Krewe.

The only thing I can think to change is the food at the Civic Center and Thomas Wolfe…although that really has more to do with the venues than with the fest itself. The food options are terrible if you don't want to leave the venue to get real food.

Clark November 1, 2010 - 3:54 pm

Moogfest was great. Kudos.

Changes:
-A link to the schedule on the home page. Duh.
-Better communication about show changes (DEVO)
-Band names that link to the band home pages or moogfest bio, each time the names are used on the Moogfest site. We're tired of clicking back and forth from the schedule to the artists page.
-Someone able to adjust the "people processing." Why line up outside when there is a gymnasium sized space inside, for queing?
-Food carts on the walking path between the venues.
-A weekend pass that can be removed from your wrist/body.
-Signs above the people lines that say what they are for. 1 day beer pass? 3 day beer pass? Paper tickets to redeem? Security? Your guess was as good as mine.

Some Music suggestions:
-the Chemical Brothers (why not?)
-Goldfrapp
-Yeah Yeah Yeahs
-Crystal Castles
-The Books
-Mike Snow

Jennifer S. November 1, 2010 - 3:15 pm

* Who would you like to see at Moogfest 2011?

Andrew Bird to fill the Clare and the Reasons spot
Beats Antique for glitchy trip-hop
Brian Eno for the eminence grise Van Dyke Parks spot
Who will take the Girl Talk dance mob spot?
And can Jonsi come every year?
(Honestly, this was such a perfect lineup, I wouldn't mind seeing some peformers become anchors and return often)

* Are there organizational changes that you think should be made?

The Devo change was confusing. What happened there? Next year, could Moogfest use text alerts, Twitter and FB to message major lineup changes?

I loved the educational aspect — maybe more workshops with more big names next year, and even get the festival musicians to attend and offer their own workshops.

It seemed strange not to directly involve Bob's widow and children. Could we give them some love next year?

More low-key daytime workshop and panel stuff. More panels and cerebral/interactive stuff during the day.

Loved the late-night local showcase! YAY to showing off great local electronic music like Ruby Slippers and Robots win.

Loved the Droid app — very useful!

Should there be an official camping area next year? This was a young festival crowd, betting they'd camp if there was an official place for them to do so.

Would love to see select parts of the festival, even just panels, webstreamed live.

Frinkazoid November 1, 2010 - 3:06 pm

I thought the weekend was an epic success!
I'd love to see LCD Soundsystem (if their still together), !!!, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, deadmau5…

White Lightnin' November 1, 2010 - 3:03 pm

Prince.

Yeah, Prince.

Mark from Weaverville November 1, 2010 - 2:45 pm
